Shoe sales ran circles around apparel in 2005

NEW YORK (Reuters) - Rising demand for jeweled shoes, wedge heels and boots of all stripes fueled 2005 U.S.

sales growth of footwear that nearly tripled apparel, said a market research company on Friday.

According to reports by NPD Group Inc. consumers spent nearly $42 billion on footwear in 2005, up 9 percent from 2004.

They bought over 1.4 billion pairs of shoes, 5 percent more than in 2004.

"Footwear is on fire," said NPD analyst Marshal Cohen. "It has emerged as the new fashion item to buy."

Retail industry analysts have frequently noted that consumers are purchasing shoes and accessories to spruce

up their wardrobes, as recent apparel fashions do not vary widely from years past.

During the 12 months ended in November U.S. apparel sales were $179 billion, up 3.4 percent from 2004.

Sales at footwear stores open at least a year rose 5.4 percent in 2005 at DSW Inc. (NYSE:DSW - news), 2.7 percent

at Foot Locker Inc. (NYSE:FL - news) and 2.4 percent in fiscal 2005 at Payless ShoeSource Inc. (NYSE:PSS - news)

Total women's shoe sales rose 8 percent in 2005, fueled by higher sales of shoes ornamented with jewels,

shoes with wedge heels, and boots, especially dress casual, hiking and casual styles.

Timberland Inc. (NYSE:TBL - news), which on Thursday posted a 4 percent rise in quarterly profit on higher sales

of its outdoor boots, is poised to take advantage of the demand, Cohen said.

"Hiking boots are the SUV of footwear," Cohen said in an interview, noting that the waterproof boots, a hip-hop fashion

staple which has started an earnest migration to the suburbs, "combine form and functionality."

"The trend is migrating outward," Cohen said, noting that women's boot sales increased 15 percent from last year.

Two years earlier, sales were flat at $2.7 billion.

"Boots are the easiest (fashion accessory) to wear," Cohen said. "They're the one thing you just can't mess up."
