CAL PERRY, CNN Correspondent: Andy Warhol is back and selling like crazy¹⁾.Eighty of his works alone last year brought in²⁾ over sixty million dollars. The painting Green Car Crash³⁾ will be auctioned next month at Christie’s⁴⁾.

UNIDENTIFIED MALE: We’ve put an estimate of⁵⁾ 25 to 35 million dollars on the picture. The world record price for Andy Warhol is 17 and a half million dollars we achieved last November for a matte painting⁶⁾ of Chairman Mao⁷⁾.

PERRY: Warhol is selling across the globe for record-breaking⁸⁾ amounts. He’s now the second highest grossing⁹⁾ artist of all-time¹⁰⁾, second only to Pablo Picasso¹¹⁾. But it takes more than just popular art to make millions. Enter Martin Summers, the well-known private art dealer in London with a client list to move¹²⁾ millions in pricey¹³⁾ art. Summers knows Warhol always had a good sense of business.

MARTIN SUMMERS, Art dealer: Making money is art. Working is art. But the best art is good business.

PERRY: It’s really Warhol’s prediction¹⁴⁾ of celebrity¹⁵⁾ that makes this particular collection so unique. Take, for example, the O.J. Simpson¹⁶⁾ piece. When you consider (that) Warhol died some 20 years ago, he would have had no way of knowing how O.J. transcended¹⁷⁾ sports into such a notori-ous¹⁸⁾ celebrity.

SUMMERS: He was also quoted¹⁹⁾ as saying. When he’d asked some friends for inspiration²⁰⁾ what to paint, and they said, “What’s your favorite sub-ject?” He said, “That’s when I started painting dollar bills.

관장님은 중앙일보 홍진기 선대 회장님의 따님으로 홍익대 출신의 전문 미술인으로 결혼전에도 상당한 조예인

데다 삼성 선대 이병철 회장님으로부터도 명작 훈련을 받았었다.

그러니 그의 안목으로 미술 시장이 기류를 형성하기에 인 터뷰에 그 자신이 응하지 않을 뿐만 아니라 그 주변

누구도 응할 수 없다 한다.

엔디 워홀 역시도 홍관장님이 무척 선호하는 작가라고 한다. 홍관장의 선택은 아주 예리하고 정확하며 결정하기

까지는 몇 개월이 걸린다고 한다. 일단 그런 연구에 들어간 작품은 홍관장님의 결정이 있기 전까지는 판매를

못하기에 홍관장님과의 거래에는 상당한 참을성이 필요하다고 한다.

5천만원 주고 구입한 국내 작가의 어느 그림은 현시가가 7억인가 70억 한다고 했다.

cnn역시도 엔디 워홀의 작품 가격이 피카소 다음이라면서 돈을 버는 것도 예술이고 작품을 그리는 것역시도

예술이지만 뭐니 뭐니해도 최고의 사업을 최고의 예술이라고 정의하고 있다. 그런 면에서 삼성 리움 홍라희

관장님은 최고의 사업가로 최고의 예술 퍼포먼스 중이다.

인터넷에 있는 그의 작품 중에서 몇 가지인데 역시 돈 버는 자와 못 버는 자와의차이는 보는 것을

어떻게 해석해 들이고 반응하는냐의 차이인 것 같다. 워홀이 보는 것이나 내가 보는 것이나 동일한 것을 보았는 데 읽어 들이고 반응하는 행동의 차이가 큰돈 만들기와 생활비 벌기의 차이 아닐까 싶다.
