Yahoo Moves To Create Digital Library

Yahoo (Nasdaq: YHOO - news) is joining forces with a handful of partners in a new effort to create an online library that will include books, research papers and multimedia content hosted in a searchable database.

Called the Open Content Alliance (OCA), the new project will include materials ranging from historical works of fiction to children's books to specialized engineering whitepapers. The objective is to provide open access to content while respecting the rights of copyright holders.

Copyright Protection

The project differs from the ambitious effort of Google's (Nasdaq: GOOG - news) Print Library Program, which has met with resistance from authors, publishers and others who say the effort violates their copyright protections.

In addition to Yahoo, the OCA includes several other companies and organizations, including the Internet Archive, Adobe Systems (Nasdaq: ADBE - news), the European Archive, HP Labs, the National Archives (UK), O'Reilly Media, Prelinger Archives, the University of California and the University of Toronto.

The ultimate goal of the ambitious undertaking is to provide easier access to millions of pages of material that search engines cannot index. To participate in the project, copyright holders have the option of distributing their content through a Creative Commons license, which encourages the personal use of digital content.

Lofty Goals

Yahoo, Google and other online portals are doing all they can to put as much information as possible at the fingertips of Internet users.

"This could be immensely valuable for the Internet community, including consumers, businesses and researchers," said Yankee Group analyst Adi Kashore. "Print has been the only medium available for many years [for some of this content], but searching through this content is extremely inefficient."

Advanced search tools, combined with digitized content, would significantly expand learning throughout the world if the process of collecting the material is done correctly, Kashore added.

"The challenge for the consortium is sifting through all of the content out there and obtaining access to that which is not available for free, and compensating for that property," he said.

Google Draws Fire

Kashore suggested that Yahoo is taking a more practical approach to the issue than Google is because the company is respecting the rights of authors and other content providers.

Given the fact that Google has been sued by the Authors Guild and individual writers, a more cautious approach, even if it creates a lengthy process to obtain the required permissions, might be the best way to proceed, said Kashore.Indeed, given the lawsuits, Google has backed off a bit, temporarily suspending its Library Project in an effort to get publishers to notify the company regarding which protected books should not be scanned.
