S. Korea to Build World's Largest Solar Power Plant
MUAN, South Korea, Jan 10 Asia Pulse - The South Jeolla provincial government said Tuesday it plans by April to start construction on the world's largest solar power facility with a U.S. firm to generate 17 megawatts of electricity per hour.
The facility will far outstrip a similar plant in Germany, which can pump out 5 megawatts per hour and currently stands
as the largest power generation plant ever built.
Earlier in the day, the provincial government reached an agreement with Kore Group, a wholly-owned local subsidiary
of U.S.-based High Quality Marketing (HQM), on the project, which will be carried out with the aid of US$150 million of foreign investment.
The agreement follows a 2004 memorandum of understanding (MOU) between the regional government and the U.S.
firm to build the facility in the provincial city of Sinan on the southwestern tip of the Korean Peninsula.
The MOU calls for Kore Group to finance and oversee the project.
Under the agreement, Japan's Sharp Corp. (TSE:6753) will provide components for the generating facility, which will be designed and installed by SunPower Corp., a U.S. company that specializes in producing this kind of equipment. Sharp occupies over 27 percent of the global market for solar cells, a key component in building such a generator.
