Yahoo, Google to Launch Services
For Advanced Cellphone Networks

Internet powerhouses Yahoo Inc. and Google Inc. are set to roll out new wireless services, taking advantage of advanced networks and cellphones to provide features similar to those available on computers.

Yahoo, Sunnyvale, Calif., soon will introduce a cellphone that it will sell through a partnership with SBC Communications Inc., according to SBC executives. The cellphone will take a step closer to linking wirelessly such cellphone services as music, photos and email with consumers' existing Yahoo accounts, address books and preferences.

Meantime, Google, Mountain View, Calif., is tailoring some popular Internet services for use on wireless devices. Starting today, for example, consumers using some types of cellphones will be able to access satellite maps wirelessly and scroll through them as they can on the Google Maps service.

The moves will mark a further step in the evolution of cellphones from communications devices to minicomputers that can be used for email, Web browsing, music downloading and even watching TV, in addition to calls. Handset manufacturers already have started to produce single devices that combine cellphones, Web surfing, wireless email and MP3 players.

"This idea of taking essential Yahoo services that we offer on PCs today and extending them to other devices including mobile phones is a huge priority for the company," said a Yahoo spokeswoman, who declined to comment on plans for a Yahoo phone.

For more than five years, consumers have been able to get basic Internet services on cellphones and other wireless devices. But initially these services were limited to a handful of sites and were clumsy to use because wireless networks operated at speeds slower than dial-up connections.

Wireless Internet services have become more popular in recent years as networks have been beefed up, and new devices have become available. At the same time, wireless providers have begun to stress Internet services, which generally cost an extra fee, as revenue growth from the standard cellphone business has leveled off. In the third quarter, for example, Sprint Nextel Corp. reported $550 million in revenue from wireless data services, up more than 60% from the same quarter a year earlier.

Sprint raised the bar last week when it joined four of the country's largest cable operators in announcing a new wireless service, available in the first half of next year, which will offer more TV features than currently available on any carrier.

SBC and Yahoo have had a partnership since 2001 and have steadily expanded it beyond traditional telecom and online services to merge video, wireless and phone services. SBC executives said the SBC-Yahoo phone, which will be manufactured by Nokia Corp., is expected to be available as soon as early next year and will cost $200 to $300. Operating on the Cingular Wireless network, which is co-owned by SBC and BellSouth Corp., the phone will also be an MP3 player, a 1.3 megapixel camera and will have a removable memory card.

Last year, Google began letting U.S. consumers get search results by sending text messages from their cellphones. Google in June began letting users get search results from an index of Web sites optimized for cellphones.

Starting today, many consumers whose phones support Java software will be able to download the Google Local application on them. From there, they can conduct searches for businesses or services in a specific geographical location and view the search results plotted on a map.

As with Google Maps accessible from PCs, consumers can see detailed satellite images of the area they are looking at. They can get walking or driving directions between points and even have their phones automatically dial the number of a business that turns up in the search results.

Helping drive the expansion of cellphone services is the fact that mobile-phone penetration exceeds that of PCs in areas of the world, Google executives say. In addition, "more of our users -- even where a PC connection to the Web is very prevalent -- are using their cellphones more," said Deep Nishar, director of product management for Google Mobile.

Google says the service initially will work on more than 100 different cellphone models. Google plans to keep increasing that number. The service is free, but it requires users to pay for a wireless data service from a cellular operator
