How do you view God? Who is he to you? When you close your eyes and reflect on his being - his majesty, grandeur, and wonder - what images blaze through your brain?
When we first come to God, young in the faith, our thoughts of him tend to exist in the area of "God as our salvation" or "God as life preserver." Sadly, many of us never get past this phase of our relationship with him. What does it mean to worship him? ... For those who dare to pursue God, who... seek his face, his great and unfathomable mystery will slowly unfold. In this pursuit, we find we must slow down from the everyday and listen to him and wait on him. When we do this, our perspective changes. We begin to think God's thoughts after him ...We see God crystallize over our lifetime... God is the great unknown, and this confuses us. The same reason we fear stepping off the edge to rappel down the cliff is the same reason we don't often like to be alone in our thoughts with God. Our minds, inevitably, swim out into an open space like the ocean or the never-ending horizon or some other uncharted vastness. Uneasiness settles in, like when we dove in to the deep end of the pool for the first time. We end up frightened, swimming back to the shores of our more comfortable thoughts. But what if he were to meet us on those safe and familiar shores? What if God came to us? What would he be doing? What would he say? What would you say? -Veneer: Living Deeply in a Surface Society, by Timothy D. Willard and R. Jason Locy
