수년전 방글라데쉬 수도 다카에 있을 때 호텔 옆의 스위스인 집의 개가 얼마나

나를 반기고 좋아하는지, 참고로 암캐였었다. 아침엔 내가 나오길 호텔 앞에서

기다리고 저녁엔에서지기다렸는지 바람처럼 날라오는 것을 보며 떠나는 날 눈시울을

붉힌 적이 있었다.그 녀석은 안기며 파고드는 게 정말 아주 매혹적인지. 캘리포니아에

사는 작지 않은 나이 51살의 여인이 17마리의 개를 자식들인양 돌보고 살다가 2마리가

죽어버렸다. 도무지 그 뒈진 개새끼를 잊을 수 없기에 버리지 않고 냉동시켜 보관해오다가

본인자신이 직접 개의 사체를 해부했다고 한다. 찾아온 보안관에게 다른 개들의 생명을

연장하여 보다 오래 같이 살기 위해서 행하였다고 한다. 그러나 정작 문제는 악취로 인해

도무지 집에 들어갈 수가 없었다고 한다. 오물 냄새와 쓰레기통의 개똥이 온 집안을

진동시켰다 하네요. 이건 무슨 조화인가. 여기에도 마약의 중독성이 아님 도박의 집요함이.

결국 13마리는 다른 동물기관에 수용되고 2마리는 달아나 버렸다고. 그러고 보면 여인이

개들을 좀은 차별 내지 학대를 한 듯, 그러니 달아난 것 아닐까. 이게 엽기지 동물애호가인가...

Woman with 17 dogs said to perform autopsy

HESPERIA, Calif. - A woman with 17 dogs in her home - two of them dead in a freezer - was taken

for mental health evaluation. The 51-year-old woman told deputies Wednesday that she froze the two dogs

after they died because she could not bear to part with them, said Sgt. Randy Beavers of the San Bernardino

County Sheriff's Department.

The woman also allegedly told Beavers she had performed an at-home autopsy on one of the frozen dogs

to determine how the animal had died, hoping she could prolong the lives of her other dogs.

"She has no malice whatsoever. She loves these animals. She thinks they are like her children," Beavers said.

Deputies said the stench of trash and dog feces in the home was overwhelming.

"When the deputies arrived, the smell about knocked them out," he said. "They couldn't even go into the house."

Thirteen surviving dogs were taken to an animal control facility. Two others ran away.

A friend of the woman telephoned deputies after phone calls to the woman went unanswered for a few days,

Beavers said.

The woman, whose name wasn't released, was taken to Arrowhead Regional Medical Center Behavioral

Health Unit for evaluation, Beavers said.
